Getting started

Before you begin make sure you have the following

Your first measure

When measuring yourself please keep the measuring tape close to your body but do not make it tight. If the measurement is tight the clothes will be tight, a little slack will allow your new clothes to fit comfortably. Measurements can be taken to the nearest 1/4 to 1/2 inch while still maintaining excellent results.

Let's start at the top

Jacket

Neck

Wrap the fabric measuring tape around your neck keeping at least one index finger between you and the tape. This should be a comfortable fit and should not be too tight against your neck.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Chest

Wrap the fabric tape measure around your chest staying under the armpits almost level with your nipples.

Tips:

  • Stand up straight
  • Breathe normally. Holding your breath will cause a larger measurement
  • Do not hold the tape too tight. Keep an index finger between the tape and your chest.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Jacket Waist

The waist of your jacket is measured around your stomach not at your hips, which is where your pants waist is measured. Measure horizontally around your stomach level with the bottom of your ribcage. This should be the widest part of your torso. Continue to breath normally and be sure to allow for a loose measurement, nobody likes a jacket that is too tight.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Shoulder Width

Measure from your end of your left shoulder to the end of your right shoulder.

Tips:

  • Stand up straight and be sure to have a straight back
  • Keep your arms to your side but do not stand like a soldier at attention, relax
  • This measurement must be done by a friend

Measurement: _______ Inches

Sleeves (Left and Right)

This measurement should be taken with a jacket or blazer that fits you well. Measure from the end of your shoulder to the base of your thumb. You may want the jacket sleeve shorter than this (perhaps to show a bit of your shirt sleeve) but still measure to the base of your thumb and then let me know if you'd like it shorter.

Measure both your left and right sleeves, it is not uncommon for these to be slightly different.

Left Sleeve Measurement: _______ Inches

Right Sleeve Measurement: _______ Inches

Jacket Length

Like your sleeves this measurement should be taken while wearing a jacket or blazer that fits you well.

Measure vertically down the front of your chest next to the collar to where you would like the jacket to end. We suggest that a jacket length end where the tips of your fingers end when you hands are flat to your side.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Pants

Waist size

Wearing a pair of trousers (not jeans) with a shirt tucked in measure horizontally around your waist. Be sure to measure where you want the top of your trousers to sit. With this measurement be sure that it is snug but not tight, you should be able to fit an index finger before the tape and your body.

Tips:

  • Stand up straight
  • Breathe normally and do not hold your breath or suck in your stomach
  • Do not use your pant size from off-the-shelf pants, it will not be the same

Measurement: _______ Inches

Seat (Hips)

Empty your pockets then wrap the tape measure around the widest point of your hips and buttocks. The tape should be snug but not tight and certainly not restrictive.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Crotch

This measurement is a U-shape that begins at the top of your waistband on the front of your body (below your belly button) wraps under you crotch and ends at top of your waistband in the back. Be sure to make it comfortable but also snug. Many off the shelf trousers have too much room so be sure to measure where you would like the pants to rest.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Thigh

Be sure that your pockets are empty then measure around the middle of your thigh at its thickest point. This is typically very high up on your leg (just below the crotch) so be sure to have a trusting friend on hand or do this measurement yourself. Make the measurement comfortable but be sure to leave at least an index finger between the tape and your thigh.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Inside Leg

Starting at lowest part of the crotch of your trousers measure to where you would like your trousers to end. Keep the tape measure taut to ensure an accurate measurement.

Tips:

  • Stand up straight
  • Wear a pair of dress shoes, consider the heel of your dress shoes
  • Do NOT look down when taking the measure, instead use a mirror

Measurement: _______ Inches

Outside Leg

This measurement begins at the top of your waistband on the outside of your leg and extend to where you want the end of your trousers to end. Be sure to keep the tape measure taut and consider the type of shoes you typically where and how you would like the trousers to fall over the shoes. As a general guide typically the backside of trouser will fall down to the heel of a man's dress shoe with a slight heel.

Tips:

  • Stand up straight
  • Wear a pair of dress shoes, consider the heel of your dress shoes
  • Do NOT look down when taking the measure, instead use a mirror

Measurement: _______ Inches

Knee

Keeping your leg straight measure comfortably around your knee at its widest point.

Measurement: _______ Inches

Ankle

This measurement is very subjective and does not need to be measured on your body. The ankle measurement is the circumference of the bottom of your trouser legs and determines how the trouser sit on top of your shoes. Ideally you want 1/2 to 2/3 of your shoe's surface covered by the trousers to allow the material to move around the shoe while you walking or crossing your legs while sitting.

Here are a few methods to properly measure the ankle

  • Measure the width of a pair of trouser that you like the cut of. Lay them flat on a table and measure one side them double that number.
  • Loop the tape measure around your ankle and let one of the looped tape measure fall on your shoe

Typical measurements

  • 14-17 is considered slim/tapered
  • 17-19 is standard
  • 19+ will be considered flared or bootcut
  • 22+ is reminescent of the 70s
